Neil, thanks for this thoughtful example of feeling like an outsider in someone else's world. I've given this topic probably too much thought throughout my lifetime - Jew growing up in ultra-Evangelical Christian Orange County, woman in a corporate environment, non-technical person in a world of technical people, and person who willingly and mindfully chose not to have children. I constantly feel like the outsider and consider, what might it mean to be on the inside. Would I be thinking for myself or doing what I thought would keep me "in"? Would it ever feel like enough, or is there always more keeping up with the Joneses to do? It feels bad to be on the outside...and I imagine being inside sometimes comes at a very heavy price.
